The petition now has almost 75,000 signatures! In just a week since launching it, that is incredible - thank you for your support. To help ensure that our voices are heard and that these supermarkets realise how essential these facilities are for their customers, there is one simple thing you could do this week. Tell them! Simply write a good old fashioned letter to your local store manager and ask them to put a changing places toilet in their store. Pop it in your handbag so that you can hand it in to customer services next time you do your shopping. You can explain why you'd like to see them install a changing bed and a hoist in their store and what difference it would make to you when you do your weekly shopping. If you personally don't need this equipment then you could write a letter asking them to make this change. You can let them know that while you don't personally need it, there are 250,000 people in the UK that do and you'd hope they would look after all their customers as well as they look after you. Some key points you might wish to include: - The key elements of a changing places toilet are an adult sized changing bed, a hoist and space along with a toilet and basin. - If there isn't space for a stand along changing places facility they could look at adjusting their existing disabled toilet or baby changing facility instead - Their duties under the Equality Act 2010 mean they do need to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people and that those adjustments should be anticipatory, meaning they shouldn't need a petition of 75,000 people telling them because they should already have done it! - The costs of such a facility could be as low as £6,000 - Without a changing places facility they are allowing disabled children to be changed on their toilet floors and are expecting disabled adults to mess themselves whilst in their store. Something they would not expect a non-disabled person to do. Sometimes head office need a gentle reminder that their stores have actual real life people visiting them, and a hand written note (or a printed one) handed in to an actual human can have much more of an effect than a faceless email landing in someone's inbox. And if these stores are getting several of these letters a day nationwide then they might start to get the hint that this really is important to many people. If you can do this, it would be an incredible help.
