I would like to thank everyone who has made comments on the Tescos Facebook page since Friday encouraging them to end the sales of eggs from caged and barn kept hens in their stores. Hundreds of you took to the page to post comments, questions and opinions. All of which will have helped to make an initial impact on Tescos.
The response I'm sure many of you received was:
"We are committed to high animal welfare standards and all of our egg producers must be fully compliant with the Red Tractor assurance scheme, as well as meet additional Tesco welfare standards.
Eggs from caged hens are clearly labelled as such, so that shoppers can make an informed decision on what they wish to buy."
Although this response is questionable, it is a starting point, and I will endeavour to gain more of a response from Tescos.
In addition to the "Facebook takeover" the petition has gained its first recognition in the media. http://www.fwi.co.uk/poultry/online-call-for-tesco-to-drop-cage-eggs-gathers+-omentum.htm
Thank you all so much for the ongoing support in my petition.
Lucy
