AIRCRAFT NOISE

Dear neighbour,

Brisbane Airport Corporation has stated on many occasions that it will ensure that every reasonable step is taken to minimise the noise impact of its aircraft operations on the community. But with the opening of the new runway, it is clear that some aircraft are ignoring what are referred to in the airline industry as “Noise Abatement Departure Procedures”. In short, these procedures require planes to climb in a particular manner when departing so there is vastly less noise impact on residential areas.

To also reduce the noise impact, Brisbane Airport Corporation should (as was again promised):

1.    ensure that departures over the bay are maximised when conditions are suitable (instead of over residential areas);

2.    require all jet aircraft to utilise the full length of the runway (instead of using “intersection departures”).[1]

These issues are occurring when the airport is operating at well below full capacity. They should therefore be addressed now.

You should immediately email your concern to our Federal Member, Terri Butler:    Terri.Butler.MP@aph.gov.au

And make sure you copy your email to: Airservices Australia and Brisbane Airport Corporation:

If you have a question of a technical nature, please contact Stuart on 0434 604 773.

[1] When the full length is utilised, the aircraft will be very considerably higher when travelling over residential areas – which makes a massive noise difference. Brisbane Airport Corporation and Airservices might argue that using the whole length of the runaway causes increased fuel consumption by reason of aircraft having to taxi an extra 500 metres. That is a hollow argument. Brisbane Airport Corporation and Airservices currently allows aircraft to travel approximately 20 kilometres in a southerly direction before then heading north. This results in a very considerably greater fuel consumption than an aircraft taxiing a mere 500 metres.
