The Canadian Animal Shelter Statistics showed that in 2021, 20,974 dogs with 10% euthanasia rate and 60,677 cats with an 11% euthanasia rate were taken in by shelters – that equals to 2,097 dogs and 6,674 cats that were euthanized and these numbers were surprisingly lower than most years.
In addition, these numbers only reflect a response rate of 53% of the animal shelters in Canada and therefore these numbers do not account for 47% of animal shelters which have taken in dogs or cats and also does not account for other species which have been taken in.
I understand that this is a controversial topic, however, I strongly believe that a temporary ban on any type of breeding should be put in place until these numbers are significantly decreased.
It is time to start holding breeders accountable for their contribution to the overpopulation in animal shelters and animals being euthanized each year because animal lives matter too!
I will be posting more updates over time – my next one will be on the behavioral issues animals develop from not being neutered/spayed so that they can be bred, in hopes to educate people as to why we should support shelters and not breeders.
In the meantime, please share and promote this petition and as soon as I have sufficient signatures, I will continue to do my part in reaching out to members of the Legislative Assembly in Alberta to gain their support so we can make a difference!
