Dear friends, Thank you so much again for continuing to share and show your support for my petition. The following support letter was delivered by e-mail yesterday to Amy Saltzman, current president of the Telluride Association, and physically to Michael Barany, chair of the Cornell Branch Committee in charge of overseeing Telluride House. It contains 109 signatures, almost all of which are from alumni or faculty of Telluride-related programs. Again, thank you for your support and please continue to share the petition. Yours, Meredith Talusan -- Telluride Association 217 West Avenue Ithaca, NY 14850 October 24, 2014 To Whom It May Concern: It has come to our attention that Telluride Association has failed to remove from its residential scholarship a student who has made repeated transphobic statements and created a physically and emotionally unsafe environment for their fellow students. Further, we are aware that in the aftermath of these actions the residents of the Cornell Branch have not been uniformly supportive of Meredith Talusan, who has borne the brunt of these actions. Multiple requests that this student not share a living space with Ms. Talusan have been ignored or treated with skepticism reflective of the kinds of attitudes that allowed this environment to exist in the Branch in the first place. As alumni of the Telluride Association we are ashamed of the association's decisions, and as non-alumni we are disgusted. An organization which takes seriously the formation of residential communities has a responsibility to enact policies that would protect residents from hateful speech and to hold its members to standards of proper conduct, in particular when the students in those communities fail to do so for themselves. In light of multiple incidents within the past two years in which unsafe environments in the branch have been fumbled, we ask that the association attempt to make this situation right by taking unilateral action to restore safe community to Meredith Talusan. This can only be done by removing the offending student form the Cornell Branch of Telluride House, and only allow that student to return at a point when Ms. Talusan feels that her psychological and physical safety are not compromised by the student's presence.
