Public Statement of the Telluride Association
October 23, 2014
Telluride Association is an independent educational not-for-profit organization whose programs are overseen collaboratively and democratically by a volunteer board of directors. Our policies prohibit discrimination on the basis of race, color, creed, religion, national or ethnic origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or physical disability. Telluride Association has a long history of including minority and disadvantaged members at our Branches and in our programs. We offer the following statement regarding recent public comments made on Change.org and other fora. We are committed to protecting the privacy of all individuals involved and cannot provide details that violate our confidentiality obligations.
Harassment on the basis of gender identity or expression merits repudiation in the strongest terms. We believe that transgender people's rights deserve protection, and we emphatically recognize the risk of violence that transgender women of color face. Telluride Association investigates all allegations of harassment and discrimination within our community. We follow established rules and procedures, make formal findings, and take actions that ensure the safety and personal integrity of all Branch residents. Whenever necessary, we offer temporary housing, professional mediation, and other forms of social and transitional support.
The Change.org petition is addressed to a volunteer board member of Telluride Association who acts through our established decision-making process and has no independent or unilateral authority on scholarship or disciplinary decisions. We appreciate the public's respect for all of our students' and community members' safety and privacy.
