Next week, on March 7, Mercy For Animals will deliver the over 225,000 signatures already collected on our petition urging the USDA to include poultry under the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act. The USDA currently excludes poultry from the Humane Methods of Slaughter Act, even though Congress has authorized the department to include birds. This means that the only federal law addressing cruelty to farmed animals does not cover 98 percent of the land animals slaughtered every year - about 9 billion animals - almost entirely chickens.
