USFS Administrator Toxic Smoke And Heat Continue To ChokeThe Sierra Range

Toxic smoke and heat from the USFS box and burn Ferguson, Lions and Donnell fires near Yosemite have continued to choke the Sierra range, our children, pets, wildlife, recreation and commerce for a combined Fire total of 143 days.

Burn smoke by-products are 12 times more hazardous to humans than cigarette smoke. A common misconception is that just because you cant smell it, it isn't harming us. Not true!

Forest burn smoke contains PM10, microscopic PM 2.5, carbon black, aldehydes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, methanol, benzene, ozone and ozone precursors and other noxious emissions.

Beyond the acute adverse effects from the smoke, it is also now recognized that oxidants found in burn smoke can cause genetic damage.

According to recent studies, between 5,000 and 25,000 people will die each year from PM2.5 wildland fire smoke.

When the USFS purposely burns a tree it doesn't really go away...... it simply turns into millions of tiny dangerous airborne toxic particles, gases and heat that leave the forest and find their way into our lungs, our children's lungs, wildlife, the ozone, streams, rivers and lakes often times hundreds of miles away.

We wouldn't let our children smoke a cigarette, why would we let them smoke millions of USFS purposely burnt trees.

How many more deaths, hospitalizations and suffering, along with increases in medical/medicare spending will occur until this USFS unnatural and purposeful man made process is stopped?

We are told by burn agencies to be “fire adapted”, however the human lung is not and never will be “smoke adapted.”
