URGENT: Tell the chicken industry to ban barbaric “nose bones” once and for all!

A 2016 Compassion Over Killing investigation of Tyson Foods exposed cruel practice of using “nose bones” – a dull plastic rod stabbed through the nostrils of young male breeder birds to restrict food intake. In response, Tyson announced it was immediately ending the practice. 

In the chicken industry, birds are bred to grow so unnaturally large, so quickly that their legs often collapse under the weight of their own morbidly obese bodies. The hearts and lungs of these genetically manipulated “frankenbirds” aren’t strong enough to sustain this growth for much longer than the average slaughter age of 45 days. So the feed intake of male birds kept as “breeders” is restricted through the use of “nose bones” in order to keep these rapidly growing birds alive long enough to reproduce. 

But since COK’s investigation, 17 of the top 20 poultry companies have confirmed that they have ended or are not using the cruel devices. Now it’s time for the voice of the industry, the NCC, to catch up by issuing an official policy against these archaic devices in its welfare guidelines.

Last year, COK’s President, Erica Meier, wrote to the NCC, urging it to ban “nose bones” -- and when COK activists converged on the NCC’s 2018 convention, an industry rep even responded that the industry was aware that cruel “nose bones” are flying the coop and were looking into the issue.

However, over the last year, the NCC has been mum on its plans. So COK’s chicken visited the industry’s annual meeting once again--this time outfitted with one of these barbaric “nose bones”--to fly home the message.
