TODAY: Join our nationwide call-in to the National Chicken Council, urging it to say “no” to cruel “nose bones”! Make a quick, polite call to 202-296-2622, ext. 4130, using our sample script below!

Because today’s “broiler” birds are genetically manipulated for unnatural, crippling rapid growth, dull plastic “nose bones” are stabbed through the sensitive nostrils of male “breeder” birds to restrict their food intake. But since Compassion Over Killing’s Tyson investigation exposed “nose boning,” one worker has been convicted of animal cruelty for this practice, and 17 of the top 20 chicken producers in the US have confirmed to COK that they’re eliminating or do not use these archaic devices.

With “nose bones” set to fly the coop, it’s time for the voice of the poultry industry, the National Chicken Council, to catch up by updating its own policies! That’s why COK appealed to the NCC this past fall, writing, “Given that the overwhelming majority of the poultry industry has now either eliminated the use of ‘nose bones’ or never engaged in using them…it seems fitting for the National Chicken Council to update and amend its Guidelines to prohibit this barbaric, outdated practice.”

To fly the message home, we sent costumed chickens flocking to the NCC’s annual meeting to urge it to give “nose bones” the boot once and for all. And during the demonstration, Tom Super, NCC Senior VP of Communications, confirmed that almost no one in the industry still uses “nose bones”--and that the council will consider this issue in its next review of its welfare guidelines.

But the NCC has since been mum on COK’s request. Help us drive home the message loud and clear! Make a quick, polite call to Tom Super at 202-296-2622, ext. 4130, using our sample script below. Then, let us know how your call went by emailing campaigns@cok.net. Thanks for spreading your wings for birds!

SAMPLE SCRIPT: Hi, my name is _____ and I’m calling as a concerned consumer to ask the NCC to update its welfare guidelines to prohibit the use of barbaric “nose bones.” A former Tyson employee was recently convicted of cruelty for using “nose bones,” and 17 of the top 20 chicken producers, including Tyson, Perdue, and Pilgrim’s, have already confirmed to Compassion Over Killing that they are phasing out or do not use them. When will the NCC give cruel “nose bones” the boot once and for all in its broiler breeder guidelines? Thank you.
