I would also like to direct you to take action around a proposed piece of legislation that is currently under consultation. Just months after pledging to “keep 1.5ºc alive” at COP26, the UK Government has published plans that would allow them to continue handing out new licences for oil and gas exploration for years to come.

The government’s proposed ‘Climate Compatibility Checkpoint’ is made up of 6 tests that it would apply before handing out future oil & gas licences. If the tests are passed, the government would consider that oil & gas licences are ‘climate compatible’ and allow fossil fuel companies to go and search for new oil! 

However, we are now at a point in the climate crisis where, according to the International Energy Agency, we cannot have any new oil and gas if we are to have a liveable future. The idea of a “climate compatible” oil or gas field is just ridiculous in the current situation! 

We would really appreciate it if you could take the following actions:

If you wish to take part in the consultation, we have a template response available here where you can tell the UK government that they must not issue new oil and gas licenses: Respond to the consultation

These actions will only take a few minutes of your time but will make a huge difference to the amount of pressure placed on the UK government. We are in a climate crisis; the last thing we need is new oil and gas licenses!
