5,338 developmentally disabled people under 65 were put in Ontario long term care homes between 2008-2012. That is the shocking statistic from the CBC Radio's The Current documentary: "21-year old Ontarian lives in a nursing home". http://www.cbc.ca/player/Radio/The+Current/ID/2511377603/ YOU can help Teresa and all developmentally disabled people stand up for their rights, by signing and sharing this petition. We want answers... It has now been more than NINE months since Teresa was forced into Long-Term Care, against her wishes, and against the wishes of her father (and me!). 1. Teresa is still waiting for an apology from the Rekai Centre, who called the police trying to force her return. 2. We are still waiting to hear what the CCAC discovered in their investigation. 3. Teresa is still waiting for a substantive response from the Hon. Dr. Eric Hoskins and the Ontario Ministry of Health. We submitted our 12-page complaint on April 16th. They have merely confirmed they are “inspecting” the matter. The government is stalling, but we are NOT giving up. This battle for Teresa's human rights will not be over until we hear from the government on how they can hold the parties accountable for the wrongs they have done. We need to ensure this never happens again because the history of harm is repeating itself... 5,338 developmentally disabled people under 65 were put in Ontario long term care homes between 2008-2012. Teresa's case -- and the CBC documentary -- shows that it is still happening. The Ontario Select Committee on Developmental Services in their final report writes, "At public hearings across the province many people recalled the painful legacy of the large government-run institutions where people with developmental disabilities were warehoused and excluded from the broader society."
