THE BATTLE TO PROTECT LIVE-WORK SPACES IN NYC IS NOT OVER

What is the battle for live-work spaces and why is it important? Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya’s creative and community-based work is all made possible through the live-work studio space at CAVE, 58 Grand Street. In 2014 Ximena and Shige applied to be legally covered under the loft law, a New York State law that allows residents to bring their loft and/or live-work spaces up to code in a legal fashion.

Due to exclusions in the Loft Law put in place in 2010 that thwart the intent of the law, misinformed determination about windows and a roll-up gate could cause Ximena and Shige to lose this space, their home, and workplace of 21 years. Though many battles have already been won in the fight to save CAVE and other live-work spaces, they need the assistance of the community in order to either win or delay the incoming vote from the Loft Board.

Why Sign this Petition? It is up to the loft board to do the right thing instead of following a flawed law. However, the loft board will listen to the community if we can collectively show them that this interpretation is flawed. By signing this petition, you can help us show the loft board that their actions affect the lives of many New Yorkers. We will be printing this petition and deliver it to the Loft Board. Please click the link to read through our demands and consider signing in order to help save the homes of the many artists and professionals that help make this city the cultural epicenter of the country.

UPDATE 12/27: Earlier this year, the New York City Loft Board voted to deny Ximena and Shige loft law coverage for their live/work home. They are now in the midst of the reconsideration process with the Loft Board. Now more than ever, your voice can make a crucial difference! Our next goal is for 2,500+ signatures to show the Loft Board that the community cares about live/work spaces like Ximena and Shige's!

UPDATE 10/18: The Loft Board will meet again October 19 at 2 pm to vote on 58 Grand Street case. Please join Ximena and Shige if you are available. The October 19, 2017 New York City Loft Board meeting will be held at 2:00 PM at 280 Broadway, 3 floor New York

UPDATE 09/26: The Loft Board motion to deny coverage to Ximena Garnica and Shige Moriya fell one vote short at the Loft Board meeting this past Thursday, September 21st. This buys these two "community positive" artists a window of one more month until the Loft Board votes again on their case. Do not assume your voices were not heard! Thanks to your collective efforts, we had 1200+ signatures going into that meeting!
