Tell the Northern Va Community College to Stop their Traffic Light Installation

The Annandale campus of the Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC) is funding the installation of a traffic light at the exit of their parking lot on Wakefield Chapel Rd across from Chapel Rd. They have planned this signal without any public notice and opportunity to comment. They have based their plan for the light on traffic data that is over two years old. They have not considered the adverse impact of the traffic light on the nearby residential neighborhoods and traffic on Wakefield Chapel Rd. These impacts include the potential for increased crashes, increased traffic delays, increased pollution, increased cut through traffic in nearby neighborhoods, and delays in emergency vehicle access due to increased traffic backups on Wakefield and resulting single lane bottlenecks. NVCC and VDOT have not seriously evaluated alternatives that might be better and safer. These alternatives could include directing more college traffic to the Little River Turnpike entrance, installing a modern roundabout on Wakefield Chapel Rd, or redesigning the median on Wakefield Chapel to make it easier for cars exiting from the parking lot to make left turns. Their self-serving approach, which infringes on the surrounding neighbors and other Fairfax residents who use Wakefield Chapel Rd, needs to be balanced by consideration of the impact of their increasing enrollment and the traffic it generates on the surrounding community. For all the above reasons, the light installation needs to be delayed until a study is completed of the need for the signal and impacts on the community and until there is opportunity for public notice and comment.
