After facing increasing pressure from San Diegans opposed to the for-profit private prison industry, California State Senator Toni Atkins announced she has donated $12,000 to non-profit organizations supporting immigrants- an amount slightly more than the campaign contributions she had received.
Other San Diego elected officials have taken similar steps:
Assemblymember Lorena Gonzalez-Fletcher has claimed she donated contributions received from CoreCivic- the nation's 2nd largest for-profit private prison corporation- but has not provided details of her contributions.
US Representative Juan Vargas has promised to donate ten-times the amount of contributions he received from CoreCivic; he received $3000 from them while serving as a California State Senator. (see: http://bit.ly/VargasDirtyMoney)
PLEASE KEEP THE PRESSURE ON THESE LEGISLATORS AND POLITICAL PARTIES TO DO THE RIGHT THING:
Encourage friends to sign the petition and ask their legislators to DONATE private prison money they have received to organizations that are helping immigrant families and to REFUSE future private-prison contributions.
