Derby People's Assembly #FairChanceDerbyDerby, United Kingdom
May 25, 2022

Thanks to your support our demands were heard and voted for today and a motion in support of our 3 action points was passed!

We gathered today to amplify the #FairChanceDerby #CostOfLivingCrisis petition with 3 specific demands including adopting the #SocioEconomicDuty

Powerful, passionate and emotional speeches were made by campaigners and people who are facing financial struggles. We invited local journalists to cover the story and it was great to see reporters from BBC Radio Derby and Derby News, a live stream via Derbyshire Live and interviews on Greatest Hits Radio Derbyshire and Derby Sound Community Radio.

Derby's 51 Councillors were told today that our petition had been signed by 575 people (online & paper combined) and backed by a collective of grassroots groups, trade union activists, foodbank workers, charity workers and concerned people via Derby United Against Poverty and Derby People's Assembly. The motion in support of our campaign, proposed by Labour and backed by all Labour and Liberal Democrat Councillors, passed despite the Tories attempted amendment to water it down and then they abstained from the vote and failed to support the people's proposals; by contrast they presented a motion to bestow a title upon a multi millionaire. Now we keep the pressure up to make sure they deliver action. Thanks to all who supported. This was a grassroots campaign - power to the people!
