With love and gratitude, Catherine p.s. I wrote a letter via email on Tuesday to Barbara Newhouse, President & CEO of the ALS Association. If you’re interested, here is what it said: Dear Ms. Newhouse: I am writing to you as a person who has been fighting ALS for fourteen years. My son, Anthony Carbajal, was diagnosed two years ago, and my mother died several years ago from this vicious disease. I have experienced firsthand the savage toll it takes on a vibrant human being's body, its obliteration of one's finances, the gaping disparity and lack of support/ communication of home health services options and the extreme stress and burden it places on families. This is personal to me, very personal. The petition I created is not intended to be adversarial, nor does it belittle the extraordinary things the ALS Association does for our community. It is a call for immediate action. We need your organization to lead us in the fight to make the changes indicated in the petition a reality. You already have in place the advocacy infrastructure, funding and support. ALS families are counting on you, and they are desperate. You have only to look through the comments section of the petition to see how much they are suffering. Improvements to home care truly is the number one issue facing our community.
