TEACH FEMINIST HISTORY AS A PART OF LIFE ORIENTATION
The Issue
No liberation movement and anti-war movement is ever successful without literature!
This petition is to convince the national Department of Education to introduce gender equality through school subjects such as Life Orientation and rudimentary level sociology.
We cannot control what boys are taught at home, so the curriculum provides the alternative foundation of personhood (which is why wars target schools and books and oppressive regimes ban books)..
Therefore, We are fighting to encourage school level subjects such as Life Orientation to introduce Anti-GBV and gender equity and equality in the puberty modules.
The objective we are aiming for is to encourage a healthy gender and sex identity from a young age that works against exploiting young boys' masculine identity, moulding it into a harmful patriarchal culture of aggression against women and other men!
Ideally in the addition to the curriculum they need to provide and facilitate:
1) anti-GBV activists give lectures at least every term during the LO classes
2) Life Orientation sex education should include (even but a brief) history of women's rights, feminism and gender equality at palatable levels for all students, but introduce it at a primary level.
3) Lastly, encourage the students to actively engage with each other about gender and identity outside of a formal setting while still enabling them to respect their cultures and home values.
Encouraging sex and gender swap plays where each young child experiences identity from the other's perspective.
The most important thing is that boys must be taught THERE IS NO FUNDAMENTAL DIFFERENCE IN THEIR HUMANITY AND FEMININE HUMANITY
This should at least introduce a change to the younger generation so that GBV ends with us, at least.
COURSE OF ACTION:
- Get six schools (2 from each socio-economic demographic) to draw up a curriculum syllabus implementing the feminist history literature which will:
- 1) Include the history of the various waves of feminism within the first week of sexual orientation lessons
- 2) Within the first few lessons, include a case study of Uyinene Mretyana's tragedy
- 3) Ensure the students write essays about gender role reversal. So if they are boys, they must write an essay on how to navigate GBV in SA. And the girls must write about what they would do as boys to mitigate GBV in their social situations.
Once this syllabus outline is complete, we plan to:
- To take the petition to the Gauteng MEC of education
- Lobby for him to escalate it to the Dept. Of Education
- Concurrently present the project to the Department of Education and place pressure on them to implement the project within the next two years (to allow for Life Orientation examinations to be restructured around the new syllabus).
Let us work together to ensure we instil sexual and gender identity discipline, responsibility, and equality as values in our society, starting with our children!
