Protest riding apps rules
Protest riding apps rules
The Issue
Every career has its own integrity and protected income. Allowing 3rd party apps to control drivers' livelihood is very fustrating. Since the launch of 3rd party apps, drivers income has dropped tremendously, up to more than 40%. All due to low fares; taking drivers for a ride yet they are making huge commission.
Grab suspends drivers without valid reason or unreasonably and they do not even allow us to explain, similar with Ryde. Only passengers complaints, they would listen which is unfair too. What are NTA and LTA doing for allowing them to decide arrogantly?
Gojek have a platform fee of 70cts on top of 20% commission. Used to have 10% levy refunded weekly but already expired! Furthermore refunded amount is not traceable in history record since they dont mention original fares. What is shown in the history record is only deducted fare amount. This is something unaccountable and the commission is too high if fares are below $10.
Worst of all is using the RYDE app which charge each driver for $15 to $35 each for suspended account due to rating and cancellation. RYDE do not have a proper system for drivers and customers to contact them when there are issues and they could only be found on Facebook or Instagram. However, they only answer to our queries as and when they like which is totally unacceptable. Ryde also do not allow withdrawal from our wallet credit for free once suspended and they insist that we must pay admin fee as their priority.
Fare system is set up by authority and adjust over years and yet these apps companies become their own authority, snatching market shares by undercutting fares. Are authority going to do something about it or is it hopeless for us drivers?
We do agree that technology helps everyone, but not eating into drivers livelihood money. All fares should be the same for fair competition. Passengers can choose what apps to book as long as all fares are the same.
Most drivers are retrenched or replaced pmet in Singapore. It is our last resource to be drivers, so that we can support families. It seems like now the market is messed up by irregulated freedom policy, which authorities do not want to help.
The drivers' suggestion is for NTA and LTA to impose stricter rules and licencing criterias, so that drivers livelihoods can be more substainable. Most importantly, the authorities should have some consciousness about our concerns and look into all the above mentioned issues.
Blessed hope for all!
