I feel I need to set the record straight about my petition and my reasons for creating it.
The people that petitioned to have this game pulled from target lied about the content of the game. At no point in the game is the player encouraged "to murder women for entertainment." You do not get "health points for committing sexual violence against women or abusing them" It was a straight out lie that pandered to concerned parents who would rather have something censored than take responsibility when parenting. I ask the question would a parent allow a child to watch an R rated porn film? I should hope not. It's a matter of responsibility.
With that said GTA V is a very violent adult game and I don't think children should be playing it. But you have to ask the questions how and why these children are getting a hold of the game and I believe there are two reasons.
The first is bad parenting, The game is rated R18+ yet just the other day I saw a father buy this game for his son at target and I believe this is very irresponsible. Just because it's a video game does not mean it's for ok for children to play it and that is clearly stated on the cover of the game.
The second is marketing. Here is a picture of a Target catalogue http://i.imgur.com/gQVDkiv.png as you can see Target have advertised GTAV in the children’s section of the catalogue alongside Pepper Pig and Barbie doll toys. So it's obvious that they are marketing the game to children which is also irresponsible.
In conclusion I think the problem lies with parents and marketing managers. Not with game developers.
My choice to use the Bible to satirise the original petition was to highlight their sensationalism.
As proven in the passage I quoted from the Bible "And the daughter of any priest, if she profane herself by playing the whore, she profaneth her father: she shall be burnt with fire." (Leviticus 21:9); the Bible actually does encourage violence against women and it is taught to children in schools.
So I believe my petition highlights a double standard in Australian censorship and begs the question where do we draw the line? Should all bibles be removed from schools as well?
It's a tough question that should be left up to the Australian people to decide rather than a dishonest and international petition of a small minority. The game had been rated and passed by the censorship board already and it had been made available for over a year before this petition was started so I believe it should stay that way.
I do not want to live in a puritan society where everyone is told how to think and behave by a small minority of disgruntled people especially those that are willing to deceive to get their own way.
