Stop the Use of Plastic Bags in Grocery Stores
The Issue
Problem
Collectively we use and discard over 1 TRILLION plastic bags each year. The biggest contributors to the plastic in the ocean are plastic bags. This plastic has a devastating effect on the ocean ecosystem, which is home to thousand of different creatures, is an abundant source of food, and provides the earth with about one half of the oxygen needed to sustain life.
Solution
Supermarkets should encourage people with better incentives to reuse more environmentally friendly bags. This can be achieved by using alternatives to plastic bags such as reusable bags and biodegradable plastic bags. Reusable bags are durable and long lasting. They are made from a variety of materials, such as calico, cotton, recycled PET, hemp and jute. Biodegradable plastic bags are made of organic plastics. It is derived from renewable organic sources like vegetable oil, corn, starch and pea starch.
