SAVE THE TALBOT PUB - YOUR HELP IS NEEDED!
Please help to save The Talbot Inn, Market Drayton’s only canal side pub. The Talbot Inn is an attractive and substantial mid nineteenth century property (c.1840) adjacent to Market Drayton Wharf and alongside the Newcastle Road which is one of the main roads into the town from the A53. It abuts the Market Drayton Canal Basin Conservation Area and is a non-designated heritage asset. The pub has served residents of Market Drayton and those living and holidaying on the Shropshire Union Canal for over 170 years.
IT IS UNDER THREAT.
The Talbot Inn was nominated as an Asset of Community Value (ACV) on the 8th November 2016 and was listed by Shropshire Council on the 23rd December 2016. A campaign group Save The Talbot Inn has formed with the aim of reopening it and protecting the pub for future generations.
There is a current planning application (16/05408/FUL) made by Menyell Developments Limited for a proposed residential development on land to the rear of The Talbot Inn for a terrace of 5 dwellings. This plot is landlocked with the only access being proposed over the car park of the Talbot Inn. Thus significantly reducing the number of car parking spaces (originally 25) and affecting land recently granted ACV status. A fence has been erected down the middle of the car park. The pub and remaining car park, which is not currently subject to a planning application, was sold by Meynell Developments Limited on the 3rd January 2017 to Huntington Properties Limited.
Objections to the current planning application have been made by the Canals and Rivers Trust, the Market Drayton sub-branch of CAMRA, Market Drayton Town Council, Market Drayton and District Road Safety Group and a considerable number of local residents. Other consultees including Shropshire Council’s Historic Environments and Highways Teams have provided specialist assessments.
This all sounds like plenty of support, however support in numbers are all important in such circumstances to demonstrate local opinion. This is why we need your help.
In order for the Talbot Inn to remain a viable public house in the current climate it needs to maintain not only its current car parking but also its previously very popular beer garden. Both of these are under threat of being affected by the planning proposal. If the pub loses these assets it loses commercial viability.
There is an underlying common sense that needs to prevail. Market Drayton has plenty of space to develop new homes if it so desires, why should we allow the ruin of part of the cultural heritage of this ancient market town and shoe horn a few out of character properties into a landlocked square of land purely for commercial financial gain? No consideration has been made by the developers to care for the town’s heritage.
We are appealing to members of the community to help save The Talbot Inn by completing this online poll. You can also help by lodging an objection to the proposed planning application through Shropshire Council’s planning portal and contacting you elected representatives (local and county councillors and Member of Parliament).
