Next System and other groups have recently been reporting on public ownership of the net and strategies for getting there, such as

suggesting that our experience with COVID-19 may provide some additional leverage toward attaining that goal, and they may be correct on that score. I can only hope their efforts get more support and a wider international effort that this petition which has hung on here for the past 5 years with little notice.
Beyond that, my personal view is that it isn't simply ownership of the net that wants repair, but of our whole idea of what an 'economy' is and what it should and might be if done correctly. In that, corona virus is not the culprit, but the HISS virus (Human Ignorance, Stupidity and Self-Interest) is. And it is an especially virulent, stubborn and deadly disease that has been with us almost since the beginnings of our species. That is what really must be defeated, or all these other pieces will be of little use as more than temporary band aids in the long term.
So, READ THE REPORTS, KEEP SHARING THIS PETITION AND OTHER MATERIALS ON THE SUBJECT. National and multinational corporate structures and financial institutions are well on their way to becoming an invincible global, stateless hegemony controlling the world's economy. They are way ahead on owning the internet for generations to come. Dislodging them from this ambition will not be easy, may be impossible, but we must try. The only other culture/structure candidate I can think of for being dominant on this planet is WE THE PEOPLE. At present, however, that's still a long-shot. It means we need to turn this little 'silver lining' into a gold ('real value') standard. As the man said, " Make it so," the only response that has a chance of competing for "ownership" ('stewardship' is the better word.) - red, 5/26/2020
