The Issue

My name is Maria, and I am writing this with a heavy heart. The persistent issue of femicide in our communities has reached alarming proportions, and it cannot be ignored any longer. In the last year in Latin America, over 4,000 women lost their lives to this brutal crime. Each number in this grim statistic represents not just a victim, but someone’s friend, sister, mother or daughter.

I remember the day my friend, Sophia, went missing. We searched endlessly, clinging to hope. But days later, she became part of the heart-wrenching statistic we are now compelled to acknowledge. Sophia’s story is not unique. Too many families know this pain, and too many communities have been scarred.

Despite numerous regional efforts, the rates of femicide remain shockingly high. According to the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), 2023 has seen a disturbing increase in such crimes, yet accountability measures remain lax, and prevention efforts are starkly inadequate.

We need urgent and decisive action. We demand the establishment of specialized law enforcement units dedicated to investigating and combating femicide. We urge governments to invest in community-based prevention programs that educate young men and women about gender equality and respect. Additionally, there must be improvements in data collection and reporting practices to better track these crimes and hold perpetrators accountable.

Your voice can be the catalyst for change. By signing this petition, you pledge support for increased safety and justice for women across Latin America. Together, we can create a society where women feel safe, valued, and respected, free from the fear of violence.

Sign this petition to join us in the fight for a safer tomorrow for women everywhere. Let us make our voices heard and demand substantial change.
