Petition updateTake a Stand Against Bullies in the CatskillsMay 1, 2024 Update

Back on October 16, 2023 when we submitted our Code of Conduct complaint to Catskill 3500 Club President Michael Bongar, we were optimistic that he would conduct a thorough investigation of our complaint. A thorough and serious investigation aided by the compelling evidence we provided and our pledge to cooperate fully should have resulted in sanctions against the two subjects of the complaint.

Sadly, the investigation called for by the Club’s Code of Conduct was never undertaken, the confidentiality of the complainants was breached, and no sanctions were issued against the subjects of the complaint. Instead, the investigation was short circuited by subject 1 resigning their position from the board and receiving a glowing praise-filled sendoff. No action was taken against subject 2 who remains in a powerful position to continue to harass and abuse. While the resignation of subject 1 solved a long running source of discord within the board, it did absolutely nothing for the complainants who continue to be harassed.

Now, six months later, the harassment and bullying abuse continues by the same two subjects. Clearly, the Club’s mishandling of the October complaint has had no effect whatsoever on “ensuring that members have an environment free from unwelcome or inappropriate speech or conduct”. The continued harassment by the subjects is making a mockery of the Club and its statement posted on April 10, 2024 by Club President Michael Bongar and Vice-President Lori Herpen.

“...Bullying or harassing fellow members, either publicly or privately, goes against the principles that our club stands for… …We urge you to cease any behavior that could be perceived as bullying immediately…”  https://www.facebook.com/100064280485814/posts/808967787922563

At this point, I’d like to remain optimistic that President Michael Bongar will conduct a proper investigation and take the actions called for in the Club’s Code of Conduct. It’s clear that the abuse and harassment is organized, continuing and seemingly enabled and coordinated by one or more existing board members. A serious and thorough investigation should confirm this.

When you sign this petition, you affirm that you stand against bullying and harassment in the Catskills. We call on all good and ethical persons and specifically the board members of the Catskill 3500 Club to sign the petition to make their commitment to “uphold our values of respect, compassion, and inclusivity” clear to all.
