SWINDON ADVERTISER EDITORIAL TODAY WE wish the Lydiard Park Heritage Trust every success with its bid to run Lydiard Park and House on behalf of its owners. Its owners, of course, are every man, woman and child in the Borough of Swindon.   When the council announced its plan to put the running of the house and park out to tender, the ensuing horror was widespread and entirely justified. Whatever financial hardships drove the decision, handing over such a great treasure to the private sector would have meant the crossing of one line too many. It is bad enough that certain of our other leisure facilities have been handed over in such away. In some instances they have had changes forced on them which the public clearly didn’t want.   What might happen to Lydiard Park and House if it fell into the hands of a private firm, even if that firm has all the assurances in the world of its benevolent intentions, doesn’t bear thinking about. The council deserves credit for at least recognising the depth of public outrage and giving the heritage trust a reasonable opportunity to come up with an alternative future vision.   From what we know of the bid, it is entirely sound and comes with the good will not only of the public but also of a large number of significant community organisations. The members of the heritage trust may well go down in local history as having saved an irreplaceable jewel from terrible uncertainty or something far worse.   Although the bid will soon be submitted, the process is far from over. The more local people express support for it -and find out what they can do to help - the greater the chance of ultimate success. A great outcome beckons.
