Sustainable Servers by 2024

Sustainable Servers by 2024

Tech's data centres run on fossil fuel power. They don't need to. We want them to become 100% carbon neutral by 2024.
According to estimates, our data centres currently produce as much greenhouse gas emissions as the aviation industry. That's 2% of the world's emissions now and as data centre usage is projected to increase five times by 2025, emissions are set to soar. Bitcoin mining alone could require 0.5% of humanity's energy by the end of the year. We're already increasing energy costs for the poorest and accelerating global environmental damage. Is that what we want?
By signing this petition you will help us get the attention of tech leaders and put pressure on data centre providers to invest in sustainable and renewable electricity for the servers that power our industry.
“Across the tech sector we need to recognize that data centers will rank by the middle of the next decade among the large users of electrical power on the planet.” - Brad Smith, President Microsoft.
Technology is one of the world's richest industries. We could be an amazing force for good. By choosing to run our servers on renewable power we can use our privilege to help build and grow sustainable energy resources (probably wind, hydro and solar) for all of humanity and make the world a cleaner and safer place to live. It is achievable. Let's do it.
If this is something you'd like to see, sign our petition and we'll lobby Cloud providers and major power users in the tech industry to accelerate their investment in sustainable energy sources. Inside five years, we want our industry to evolve to support a fairer, more energy-secure world for everyone.
