Communities in Ontario demand government to prioritize public safety FIRST

Hello to my Oshawa friends. You will remember signing my petition last year regarding public safety issues with the micro-homes. You remember we fought hard just to get one informal meeting with Regional staff, where we begged for more security in the area. Then you will remember what happened to Ken Chopee only two short months later. Although the micro homes have been quiet after that brutal death, the Durham Region has not stopped placing low barrier shelters in other residential communities like Whitby where a large shelter is opening in early 2024. The community in Whitby was shocked and also fought hard, and after 30 hours of delegations in council, not much was accomplished. Sound familiar?

In the near future, the Ritson school property will be a much larger program in your neighbourhood to be used as part of a "hub" of social housing with all the famous "wrap around services" that will bring more negative impact to the community. Public safety is still not a priority.

There are many issues at play when you consider the lack of democratic process in council as well as the failure to prioritize public safety. What I have learned over the past year is that many many other communities are experiencing the exact same lack of democracy and same loss of public safety in their once safe neighbourhoods. I have formed a liaison with other Ontario communities (and beyond). Places like Timmins, London, Chatham, Dryden, Pembroke, Belleville, Cobourg, Richmond Hill, Ottawa and Toronto and even PEI. The list is growing. Because leaders in these communities are prepared to take a stand against what is happening. We have a Member of Parliament representing us, and we need your help. Your elected officials are exchanging the rights of one vulnerable group (addicted homeless) for the rights of an even more vulnerable group (children and seniors). Your elected officials are not following a democratic process when they place low barrier shelters in residential neighbourhoods and then fail to prioritize public safety. Take a stand!
