Kapparot

Kapparot is a Jewish tradition that is practiced on the eve of Yom Kippur. During Kapparot hundred of chickens and roosters are slaughtered. Prior to the slaughter, the animals are kept in cramped cages and left to the mercy of the elements. During a previous Kapparot, multiple chickens drowned after being left out in a storm. When the time finally comes a rooster or chicken is swung around one’s head and is then killed while acting as a “substitute” for the individual, as an atonement for their sins. Some people substitute the chicken for a bag of money. As a matter of fact, prominent rabbis such as Nachmanides have condemned the practice on the grounds that it's a pagan practice.
