Supporting Students' Well-Being: Improving Their Mental Health
The Issue
As a student, I have seen many peers, as well as myself, struggling to manage time and school work while maintaining good mental health. This is not only in the school where I am studying, but also in other schools, as many students have begun sharing their experiences online. Late nights and constant pressure leave us exhausted and overwhelmed every day.
In schools across the nation, students are experiencing high levels of stress and exhaustion due to increasingly long school days coupled with heavy workloads. This mounting pressure significantly impacts their mental health, leading to anxiety, academic burnout, and difficulty in balancing educational responsibilities and personal lives.
This issue is not just about statistics; it's about real people we see every day. Studies have found that teenagers who are stressed and sleep deprived are more prone to developing mental health disorders such as depression and anxiety. They also notably have lower academic achievements. According to a study by the American Psychological Association, 45% of high school students report experiencing stress from school "all the time."
What's worse is that prolonged exposure to such pressure can lead to long-lasting repercussions, affecting both students’ future educational prospects and their personal development. This is why immediate action is necessary.
To counteract these issues, we propose: offering time management resources and supports, implementing more efficient teaching methods, and integrating mental health programs within the school curriculum. Teachers and administrators must collaborate to ensure that educational standards do not come at the expense of students' well-being and mental health.
We urge education boards to revisit the current curriculum and assess whether the workloads are truly beneficial for students’ learning and mental health. Schools should be a place of learning and growth, not stress and burnout.
By signing this petition, you support improving the mental health and well-being for all students. Let's help students reclaim their mental well-being and future success!
