Support women and families escaping domestic abuse
The Issue
I vividly remember the moments of fear and helplessness enveloping my home. My mother, siblings, and I have found ourselves trapped in the vicious cycle of domestic abuse. We dream of freedom, a life where we can wake up without the constant dread of the next violent episode. But reality hits—escaping isn’t just about courage, it's about having the resources to start over.
In Australia, an alarming number of women and children are living in dangerous domestic situations. Statistics tell us that one in six Australian women have experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or former partner. And yet, the barriers to leaving remain high—primarily financial. Many families, like mine, cannot afford new beginnings due to lack of funds for housing, legal aid, and basic necessities.
Domestic violence support services are already working hard, but we need enhanced financial programs specifically tailored to help victims move out safely and permanently. This includes increased funding for shelters, rental assistance, and legal advocacy. The current economic support systems are often insufficient, causing victims to stay in harmful environments.
We call upon the Australian government to allocate more resources to community services and social safety nets dedicated to helping victims of domestic violence start anew. By providing substantial financial aid and scalable solutions, we can give hope to those who need it most.
Imagine a world where my family—and countless others—can live free from fear. Small changes in policy can significantly impact the lives of domestic abuse victims, offering them the dignity and safety every person deserves.
Together, we can shine a spotlight on this pressing issue and demand the resources needed to break free from the cycle of abuse. Your signature can turn a whisper of hope into a shout for change. Please sign this petition to help create a path to safety and independence for families living under the shadow of domestic violence.
