I’m commenting on the cities potential strategy to euthanize/ rehome/ bounty the key west chickens.

The petition has over 800 signatures so now it’s time to show up and present them. It would be great to have the numbers in person to show the city our support for a more humane plan. I also contacted the city mayor and district 6 city commissioner with this plan. ⬇️

Proposal to the city of Key West City : Protecting the Local Chicken Population

Introduction:The Key West local chickens, or "roosters," have become an iconic part of the island’s heritage, cultural identity, and natural landscape. Over the years, these free-roaming chickens have contributed to the island’s charm, tourism, and community spirit. Unfortunately, recent discussions have suggested the potential euthanizing or instituting a bounty on these animals due to concerns over noise and damage to property. While we understand the challenges these chickens present, we believe that taking drastic measures, such as euthanasia or setting bounties, would be counterproductive and harmful to the community in several important ways.
This proposal aims to advocate for alternative solutions that allow the chickens to remain a cherished part of Key West, while also addressing any concerns the community may have.
1. Cultural and Historical Importance:The local chickens are not only a unique feature of the island’s ecology, but also an integral part of its cultural heritage. These birds, descendants of domestic fowl that were abandoned or escaped, have become a symbol of Key West’s independent spirit. Their presence is intertwined with the island’s identity, and for many visitors, seeing the chickens roaming freely is one of the unforgettable experiences of their trip. Removing the chickens would diminish part of what makes Key West unique and disrupt a tradition that has lasted for generations.
2. Tourism and Economic Impact:The presence of the chickens is not only a nostalgic and cultural asset but also a tourism draw. Tourists flock to Key West in part to see these iconic animals, which have been immortalized in photographs, blogs, and social media posts. Removing or harming the chickens would risk alienating tourists who see them as part of the island’s charm. The tourism industry, a primary source of revenue for Key West, could suffer negative consequences from a drastic change in the city’s character.
3. Humane Alternatives to Euthanasia:Rather than resorting to euthanasia or bounties, we propose the following humane solutions:
* Population Control through Safe and Ethical Measures:Implementing a voluntary sterilization program for the chickens, where licensed professionals can safely and humanely sterilize some of the birds, could help manage the population over time without harming the animals. Additionally, providing educational programs to encourage local residents and business owners to support humane practices (such as keeping chickens in enclosures) can help mitigate concerns about overpopulation.
* Relocation to Sanctuaries or Farms:For areas where chickens are particularly disruptive, relocation to farms or sanctuaries, where the chickens can live freely but away from urban environments, would be a more ethical and effective solution than euthanasia. We could partner with animal sanctuaries willing to adopt and care for the chickens.
* Community Engagement and Education:Develop a public outreach program to educate residents and visitors on how to coexist peacefully with the chickens. This would include guidelines on how to prevent feeding them in public areas, understanding their behavior, and minimizing noise complaints. Through collaboration, we can strike a balance between respecting the chickens and maintaining a peaceful living environment.
4. Environmental Considerations:Chickens, when kept in balance with their environment, do not pose a significant ecological threat. In fact, they often help with natural pest control, such as reducing insect populations and contributing to soil health. Studies have shown that managing chickens in urban environments, as long as their numbers are controlled and their movements guided, does not cause long-term harm to the ecosystem. Furthermore, removing the chickens could cause unforeseen ecological consequences.
5. Legal and Ethical Considerations:Many in the community view the proposed actions against the chickens as inhumane and ethically problematic. Euthanizing or putting bounties on the birds could be seen as cruel and unjustifiable. As a community that prides itself on progressive values and compassion, Key West has the opportunity to set a positive example by finding solutions that reflect its respect for animals and the environment.
Conclusion:Rather than taking drastic and harmful actions, we propose working together to implement compassionate and effective solutions for managing the Key West chicken population. By taking a balanced, humane approach, we can continue to celebrate the local chickens as part of the island’s cultural and natural heritage, while addressing any legitimate concerns the community may have.
We urge the Key West City Council to reject any measures that would harm or unnecessarily remove these animals and instead adopt a more sustainable, humane, and community-driven approach.
Recommendations:
* Adopt a population control strategy that includes sterilization and relocation options.
* Implement a public education campaign promoting coexistence with the chickens.
* Engage local animal sanctuaries for potential relocation partnerships.
* Explore alternative solutions to mitigate noise and property damage without harming the chickens.
