The Issue

Every day, as a South African woman, I step outside with a flutter of anxiety in my chest. The simple act of walking down the street is not just a journey; it is a battle with fear. This is not just my story, but the story of countless women and girls across South Africa.

We live in a society where violence against women is rampant and persistent. According to the South African Police Service, statistics show a distressing rate of gender-based violence, with thousands of cases reported every year. Each statistic is not just a number, but a woman with a life, dreams, and a family who love her. This is not a fate we should have to accept.

The impact of constant fear is profound. Women are afraid to leave their homes, to work late, to take public transport, or even to socialise. This affects our freedom, our careers, and ultimately our happiness and wellbeing. All South African women deserve to live without the constant dread of becoming another statistic.

We call on the South African government and law enforcement agencies to take immediate and effective action. This includes investing in more comprehensive safety initiatives, enforcing stricter penalties for offenders, and increasing visibility and accountability within communities. We need real change to make our streets safer.

Furthermore, we need educational programs that address and challenge the root causes of violence against women. By educating young people about respect and equality, we can begin to create a culture that values women's safety and dignity.

Our daughters, sisters, mothers, and friends deserve to feel safe. It is time for action, not words. Every woman has the right to live freely without fear.

Join us in demanding change. Sign this petition and stand with the women of South Africa to build a safer, more equal society where no woman has to look over her shoulder in fear.
