We ask Mayor Ted Byrd and the City Council of Harrisonburg, VA to support honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by renaming Cantrell Ave to Martin Luther King Jr. Way. This great leader represents peace and understanding. He means so much to so many of us. He reached out to the whole country in a time of national pain and inspired us to walk together against the storm. We listened and he led the way. He embraced us all no matter who we were.
Please also honor the community who has made this request of you. The African-American community and its supporters hope you will see that now is the time to stand up and honor their history through this request. Embracing the contributions of the community and their families who chose to stay in Harrisonburg following the Civil War, teachers, carpenters, care givers, city government workers who helped build Harrisonburg. And yes some who lost their family homes in the name of progress in the 1960's.
Thank you, Mr. Mayor and the City Council, for your time and service to Harrisonburg and for your consideration of our request to rename Cantrell Avenue in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
