We Are Almost at 100 Signatures! Please Speak Up at the September 23 Board of Education Meeting!
We are very close! As of this afternoon, 97 people have signed this petition -- just three signatures short of our first major milestone of 100.
For a grassroots effort launched only a few days ago, this is an important early showing of community support. Thank you to everyone who has signed, shared the petition, and spoken up.

Every additional signature helps demonstrate to the Board of Education and district administration that this concern extends beyond one family or one school and deserves districtwide consideration.

The district strongly encourages advance registration. Speaking requests are reviewed on a first-come, first-served basis, and non-agenda public comment is limited to 30 minutes. If more than 10 people register, not everyone will necessarily be heard -- so please sign up early.
Each speaker is limited to three minutes. Please use your own words and briefly explain how this policy affects your family and why you support a narrow clarification allowing restricted smartwatches to remain worn in Schooltime or a comparable locked-down mode. The Board needs to hear independent, firsthand perspectives from families across the district.
Our request remains simple (and only applies to smartwatches, not cell phones):
Continuous wear does not mean continuous communication.
A restricted smartwatch can remain silent and limited throughout the school day. If a student misuses it, that conduct can be addressed just like any other rule violation.
Our records review raises serious transparency questions
On September 3, we submitted a Colorado Open Records Act (CORA) request seeking records concerning how this policy was developed, including its supporting research, consideration of restricted-wearable alternatives, and any parent or community engagement.
The district began producing records on September 11, with a much larger production becoming accessible on September 12. We are continuing to review more than 1,000 pages and have notified district counsel that several specifically requested categories appear to remain missing.
The district’s own August 12 Board memorandum states that the recommendation was made “in response to input from the public and school staff.” However, in the records produced so far, we have not located ANY documentation showing that parents or the broader community were invited to provide input on the specific PK-8 requirement that smartwatches may not remain worn. Nor have we located a documented technical evaluation of restricted-wearable alternatives such as Schooltime.
Our review is continuing, and we are not claiming that no outreach occurred. We are saying that the records produced to date have not substantiated the district’s account of public input informing this particular requirement.
Regardless of where someone stands on smartwatches, meaningful parent input and a transparent decision-making record should matter to every SVVSD family.
