The Issue

Every day, I wake up with a heavy heart, fearing for the safety of my mother and my sisters. The thought that they might not return home safe is haunting. The devastating reality is that women around us are losing their lives, falling victim to violence that continues to plague our communities. This isn't just a statistic for me - it's personal, it cuts deep, and it's a pain I am not willing to ignore.

In South Africa, we hear stories too often of women disappearing, only to be found days later having suffered unimaginable violence. According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), gender-based violence (GBV) has reached critical levels, with femicide rates five times higher than the global average. Each story is a life cut short, a future stolen, and a family left to mourn.

This petition is a call to action. It is time for the South African government to take concrete measures to safeguard the lives of women, our mothers, and sisters. We need immediate and effective policy measures to combat GBV. This includes the allocation of more resources towards education and awareness campaigns, strengthening the implementation of existing laws, and providing better support systems for victims.

An increase in funding for women's shelters and support services would provide much-needed refuge and assistance to those at risk. Moreover, a nationwide campaign to educate and change societal attitudes towards women can start the conversation about respect and equality from a young age.

We need the government to ensure harsher penalties for perpetrators of violence against women. The justice system should work for the victims, not against them, ensuring that offenders are held accountable and that survivors receive justice.

This issue isn't just affecting the women facing it every day; it ripples through entire communities, affecting each and every one of us. We must act now, for protection is not just a need, but a right. Sign this petition and urge the authorities to prioritize the safety of our women. Let's come together to ensure a safer future for the women of South Africa.
