I am Trying to get meetings set with the authors of this bill while I am in DC, between March 1-4, 2015, Representative Jerrold Nadler (D- NY) and Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX). I am working with the Coalition to Promote Living Kidney Donation on a related campaign: to persuade the Health Resources and Services Administration to support efforts to promote living kidney donation. Since its founding at the beginning of the year, the Coalition has grown to eight members, including the American Association of Kidney Patients (AAKP), Transplant Recipients International Organization (TRIO), and Donate Life America-Northwest. I have cc’d a couple representatives of the Coalition, including the leader of the Coalition, Josh Morrison, a kidney donor who founded a new nonprofit called WaitList Zero and the President of AAKP, Paul Conway. Our Coalition is looking for members of Congress to sign a letter supporting living donation and implementation of Congress’s intent in laws like the Charlie Norwood Act and the Stephanie Tubbs Jones Gift Medal Act. We focus particularly on the Organ Donation Recovery Improvement Act, which in pertinent part states, "allocates grant funding for “projects to increase organ donation and recovery rates, including living donation.” (42. U.S.C. 274f-1(b)). HRSA is not currently allowing living donation projects to apply to these grants. This will help living donors everywhere.
