This law is designed to remove hurdles for people who want to donate kidneys. Specifically, according to the National Kidney Foundation, it does three things: 1.) It prohibits life, disability, and long-term care insurance companies from denying or limiting coverage or charging higher premiums for living organ donors. 2.) It clarifies that living organ donors may use the Family Medical Leave Act to recover from surgeries and procedures involved in kidney donation without fear of losing jobs or benefits. 3.) It will cost the federal government no money. The American Society of Nephrology has stated that the act could potentially save Medicare between $565 million and $1.2 billion over 10 years.
