The home's first owners, the Mathers family, owned a local shipping company. They brought up unique hardwoods and timbers from South America to build the home.
Even more uniquely, the home interior was built in large part by Ship Carpenters and finish carpenters who worked on the Mathers ships in Nova Scotia and for many of the other famous Nova Scotia based shipbuilders and shipping lines including Samuel Cunard’s early companies.
In an unusual twist of fate, the woodwork, craftsmanship and style of the Jubilee House interiors may be the best surviving example of golden age Nova Scotian ship’s carpenters original work existing in the world.
