The RRISD Board of Trustees just voted ‘YES’ to approve the alternate boundary line plan that was recently updated on November 11th. We should be proud to declare Victory on this petition. Collectively we represented several neighborhoods with varied concerns across the impacted area. The final proposal was a good plan for all of the students of RRISD. Before we close this out, there were a few lessons learned during this process. First, let’s show our appreciation for the Board of Trustees and Administration. They have a difficult job and they are all working hard to make sure we continue to have a destination district for our children. Second, we can’t afford to not to be involved in our communities and our public schools. Nothing could be more important for our future than to ensure an equal, quality education for every child. Last, watching this process unfold it’s clear that we can make a difference when we are organized, united, and well informed citizens. Despite their best efforts, the experts don’t always get it right on the first pass. In the end, I think the board voted on the right proposal though. We can feel good about our role in getting to this point. I’ll leave you with a quote and a call to action to stay involved moving forward (especially locally): “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead
