Special Meeting - 6:30 PM - Thursday, November 9th, 2017

The last time Dana Lewis went to the Stonington Shellfish Commission meeting he expected that standard procedures would be followed. The Stonington Shellfish Commission is a respected body whose stewardship and protection of the local waters is recognized by both private and public parties who have worked with them. Mr. Lewis would state his plan to the commission and they would ask him questions. Procedure reserved public comment and debate for the official hearing which would be in a few weeks. A handful of individuals who live near Quiambaug Cove gathered their family and friends to oppose Mr. Lewis’s plan. Their plan did not include meeting procedure or Robert’s Rules. Instead they gathered their allies and proceeded to shout down Dana and the Commission. Mr. Lewis was not able to speak even though he was on the agenda. The meeting had to be rescheduled. Dana is a quiet and private man who does not enjoy public speaking or confrontation. That is why your support and comments have been so powerful. Thank you all so much! On Thursday, November 9th there will be another meeting in which Dana is meant to share his plan with the commission and the public. The worst-case scenario is not Dana’s plan being rejected by the Commission. The worst-case scenario is if a small group of individuals are allowed to steamroll policy, procedure and due diligence by shouting down the applicant and the commission.
