Support and compensation for North East Freeway works impacts
The issue
PETITION — RESIDENTS AFFECTED BY FREEWAY WORKS
We, the undersigned residents and community members, are calling for greater support and compensation for the ongoing impact of the freeway works in our local area.
We understand that major infrastructure projects are necessary and that some disruption is unavoidable. However, the scale and extended duration of these works are having a significant impact on residents and the surrounding community.
Our concerns include:
Excessive construction dust affecting homes, windows, vehicles, driveways and outdoor areas, resulting in significant additional cleaning.
Increased cleaning costs, including professional cleaning, window cleaning, vehicle washing and additional cleaning products.
Extended commute times due to changed traffic conditions, lane closures, detours and congestion, resulting in additional fuel costs and lost time.
Ongoing noise and general disruption affecting the amenity and enjoyment of residential properties.
Specify a reasonable area for affected residents
We also believe the area considered eligible for support should be reasonable and based on the actual impact of the works, rather than an overly restrictive distance from the construction site.
Construction dust can travel beyond properties immediately adjacent to the works, particularly depending on weather and wind conditions. Similarly, traffic changes and congestion can affect residents well beyond the immediate construction zone.
Residents should not be excluded simply because their property falls outside an arbitrary boundary when they can demonstrate that they are experiencing genuine impacts from the works.
We are calling for:
Stronger dust suppression and regular cleaning of construction-affected roads.
A fair cleaning compensation or reimbursement program for residents experiencing excessive construction dust.
An affected-resident area that reasonably reflects the actual reach and impact of the works.
Recognition of the additional costs and time residents are incurring as a result of the works.
Appropriate compensation or community support for residents experiencing significant and prolonged disruption.
We support investment in our transport infrastructure, but residents should not be expected to bear the ongoing financial and personal costs of construction without appropriate recognition and support.
