Require Legal Aid Ontario and GTA Legal Clinic Transformation Project to draft a new vision of legal services through genuine consultation with low-income communities, legal clinic clients and staff.
The Issue
Support Access to Justice for Poor People in Toronto!
Help Prevent the Closing of Community-Based Legal Clinics in the City of Toronto!
We need your help to defend against an imminent threat to community legal services. There is a proposal in the works that would replace 17 community-based clinics in the GTA with 5 mega service centres. Under this proposal the 14 community-based clinics located in the City of Toronto would be replaced by 3 of these mega service centres meant to serve all the low-income people in the city!
The GTA Legal Clinic Transformation Project, originally established to look at ways to improve community legal services for poor and marginalized people, has, itself, transformed into something altogether different. Funded by Legal Aid Ontario and led by a group of Executive Directors seconded from legal clinics, the project has lost its way due to a lack of proper consultation with the communities they serve and the frontline workers who provide community legal services.
The Project now appears to be seized by notions of rationalization and efficiency, uninformed by any meaningful or broad-based consultation with low income communities or clinic workers. They are soft-pedalling their vision as a merger or amalgamation, but it is actually a destructive “Transformation”. The proposal would destroy more than 30 years of community history, thousands of social, professional and inter-agency relationships and many jobs. Replacing 14 community clinics with 3 bureaucratic mega service centres will NOT improve access to justice for the growing number of poor and marginalized people in the City of Toronto.
