Silver Spring Intermediate Enforces NEW Dress Code Rule; the dreaded fingertip rule!

From the information I have access to (multiple students from SSI, and their siblings), I have found out that in this past week, SSI staff have started writing-up students because their shorts are “too short”. Before, all they were worried about was skinny strap tank tops and crop tops. Now, they are dress coding students because their shorts are too short or their leggings are too tight! The way they are determining if the shorts are too short is if their fingertips reach past the bottom of the shorts. For some people, with shorter arms than most, this is no problem for them. But for some, this rule is impossible to follow, especially recently because the weather has been getting warmer, without getting a completely different wardrobe that consists of very long shorts. This new rule is ultimately sexist, classist, and body shaming! One reason it's sexist is because the style of "short shorts" is generally worn by girls. My source at SSI tells me that no boys have gotten written up, or even talked to because of the length of their shorts. Also leggings, specifically "tight leggings" (which makes no sense, all leggings are meant to be tight), another style mostly worn by girls, have been banned. A reason these new rules are classist is because some families in our district may not be able to afford new clothing for their children, and making them feel bad about their situation by punishing their children is definitely not the way to go. The main reason this is body shaming is because every body is different! Some girls are more developed than others, so leggings on them may be tighter. They could get in trouble and their friend won't, even though they are wearing the same exact thing. Or, a girl with long arms could get in trouble for wearing "short shorts", even though someone else with shorter arms is wearing the exact same shorts! These students were not informed ahead of time (that I know of) that these things were now against the rule. Nowhere in the dress code (in the student handbook) does it have anything about a fingertip rule, or anything about tight leggings, although it does state, "Any article of clothing or manner of hairstyle or make-up which is determined by the administration to interfere with the educational process is prohibited, including, but not limited to...(etc.)" As far as i'm aware, this new rule is only at SSI, but hopefully, with your help, it will be gone before too long!
