We sent a suggestion to the Mayor of Pune to consider adorning a public space of the City with a memorial of Guruji in his own āsana. The Mayor has been informed that we are in the process of naming an āsana after him. It would be a wonderful tribute to one of the city's most esteemed citizens on the occasion of his 100th Birth Anniversary and a recognition of Guruji's excellence in the field of yoga. The city of Pune has become the main attraction in Maharashtra for yoga practitioners worldwide. The Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute is visited by thousands of seekers every year and in 2017 received an award from the Prime Minister for its outstanding contribution in the promotion and development of Yoga. More recently the National Geographic Magazine listed the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute as one of the places in the world that will change your life. We have also informed the Governor of Maharashtra about our suggestion to the Mayor of Pune in the hope he will support and contribute to bringing this idea to fruition. We are currently looking for people who could help us in following up in person with the respective authorities in Pune and Mumbai. The Memorial could be accompanied by a plaque with the Sundararāja Stavanam composed by Guruji's grandson Srineet:
वैज्ञानिकः शिक्षकत्वे कलाकार आसनेषु यः |
योगाभ्यासे च तत्वज्ञस्तं वन्दे सुन्दरं गुरुम् |
योगवृक्षो लोके -स्मिन् वर्धितो यस्य प्रेरणया |
योगाचार्याय गुरवे सुन्दराय नमो नमः ||
I bow to (I praise) Guru Sundaram* who was a scientist in his teaching, an artist in his asanas and a philosopher in his yoga practice.
I offer my salutations again and again to Guru Sundaram by whose impetus the tree of yoga flourished in this world.
*abbreviation for Sundararājā
