Keep free school buses to Suffolk schools!

Scrapping free school transport in rural Suffolk, specifically for villages surrounding Bury St Edmunds, will leave more than 800 children and families without any choice of school. As a result, some schools will experience devastating loss of pupil numbers, others will gain devastating influx such that their buildings and infrastructure will not cope.
Many families will need to sell possessions or take out loans in order for their children to get to (compulsory) post-16 education. Whilst the very lowest income families might get help, it is the average rural family who will be penalised.
Suffolk County Council might say that 88% of pupils make their own way; and that this offers 'more travel choice' but these figures are ONLY TRUE FOR URBAN AREAS. The plan is not properly thought through.
SCC need to step up to the challenges of rural education where children cannot walk to the next nearest school and where whole communities are reliant on public transport.
This petition requests that SCC withdraws the proposal to change the current school bus arrangements.
Please sign this petition EVEN IF IT DOES NOT AFFECT YOUR CHILD! Everyone must pull together and fight to save our public services before it is too late.
