South Hockey Coaches NOT on the Agenda for Board of Ed Meeting Tonight

The hockey coach position at South is still "TBA" on the agenda for Tuesday's meeting. I had told you guys that the Board had done a great job by creating a process to get the best available coach. After the last Board meeting, Superintendent George told the Independent newspaper: "We are not making a recommendation tonight...It will be a competitive process, and the best person available... will be selected as soon as possible to represent Middletown High School South ice hockey." The job has been posted; it's been four weeks and nothing decided. Isn't the current coaching staff the best avaible choice then? We still do not know why the "new direction" was requested by the Principal and AD. It's a secret apparently, an ongoing "personnel situation" AD Rich Carroll told the newspaper and me. We still don't even know why the Administration did not ask Coach Gutt back. Of course, keeping the reasons secret for scrapping a successful 11 year program that is the envy of the Shore Conference Public Division does not stop the rumours - and by now there are many, many rumours floating around. This whole process seems to make sense to only a few silent conspirators who might benefit personally at the expense of the student athletes. Help me explain why our kids have to endure this uncertainty. There are practice sessions already scheduled for August, and the kids have not had any summer strength and agility training at South. North though is just humming right along. Berk
