Subsidise B7 diesel for eligible users in Malaysia
The Issue
In Malaysia, I am one of the many diesel vehicle owners who rely heavily on fuel affordability to maintain our livelihoods. Some of us have vehicles that are not compatible with B10 or B15 biodiesel blends due to older engine specifications or specific manufacturer recommendations. For me and countless others, our only safe and viable option is using B7 diesel. Unfortunately, without a targeted subsidy, the increased costs associated with purchasing B7 diesel are significantly impacting our finances.
Diesel vehicles play an essential role in Malaysia’s transportation sector, supporting various industries such as logistics, agriculture, and commercial transportation. More than just our personal transportation, these vehicles ensure goods and services reach every corner of our nation. When costs rise excessively, it not only strains individual vehicle owners but can also lead to higher costs of goods and services for everyone.
The introduction of a targeted subsidy for B7 diesel would offer a fair solution. By implementing a reasonable premium over the existing subsidised rates for B10 and B15, or establishing a specific monthly quota for B7 consumption, we can ensure affordability for those of us who truly need it. A well-planned targeted subsidy system could be monitored using up-to-date technology to minimise misuse while guaranteeing this crucial support reaches only eligible users.
Several countries around the world have successfully implemented similar targeted subsidy approaches that have proven effective and financially sustainable. Implementing this strategy could also support Malaysia's broader environmental commitments by promoting the use of biodiesel, in turn aiding the reduction of carbon emissions in the transport sector.
I urge the policymakers and stakeholders within the Malaysian government, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs to consider this important issue. It's imperative to develop a sustainable and equitable solution that balances economic burdens with the need for environmental stewardship.
Please sign this petition to support the implementation of a subsidised B7 option for eligible users. Together, we can appeal for practical change that supports citizens and supports our economy.
