
Overnight, the Religious Discrimination Bill passed the lower house after Labor revealed it would vote for the Bill (with some proposed amendments). That means the Bill is now headed to the Senate.
Labor wants to remove the ‘statements of belief’ clause from the Bill, but that’s not going far enough to protect LGBTIQ+ students and other vulnerable Australians.
The ‘statements of belief’ clause is one of the more terrifying aspects of the Bill, but it’s not the only troubling element. This Bill is still a sword, not a shield and we simply can’t deliver protections for some people of faith at the expense of others.
