End Child Marriage in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts
This petition had 1,720 supporters
In the Commonwealth of Massachusetts between 2010 and 2014 almost 200 children, mostly girls were married and some as young as 15. Almost 82% were girls who married men who were decades older. Shockingly, it is is legal for children under the age of 18 to get married to adults with parental and judicial consent. Child marriage undermines the child's health, education and increases the risk of sexual abuse and poverty. Children in marriages are often trapped and cannot get divorced or leave an abusive marriage because they are minors and cannot access shelters, or other desperately needed social services. In order to prevent this injustice and abuse from happening to our children in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, we must make it completely illegal for anyone under the age of 18 to get married. Please sign this petition in support of H2310/S785 "An Act to End Child Marriage in Massachusetts" sponsored by Representative Kay Khan and Senator Harriette L. Chandler so that child marriage is abolished.
